Bus Transportation in Rio

There are many public bus in Rio and are very easy to access. Buses display their destinations as you would see others in some countries.

The windshield carries a smaller sign at the bottom corner showing the areas being passed by. If you see your destination listed just wave it like you wave a taxi even you are at it bus stop. When you get on the bus you will have to pay to the ticket sales person and pass the tourniquet. The regular price is R$1.60 for a non air conditioned bus. R$1.70 for AC bus. Review with the driver your destination. There could be a better route. You may ask the driver to drop you off anywhere along the way.

One evening I ride the bus to Ipanema, when the bus stopped at the red light there is a teenage boy who jumped at the bus window from outside and hang himself to the window frame like Superman. Behind the window were 2 teenage girls who look like tourists. The boy asked the girl seating beside the window in English if he can give her a kiss. The girl responded by advancing her cheek close to window then the boy kissed her. All his gang friends who standing in the sidewalk cheers and applause. That was during the carnival time.

You have smaller buses for going out of Rio (e.i. Niteroi) and it cost double.

Subway is very clean, comfortable and safe to go. It is especially useful to take you from Copacabana to Botafogo, Flamengo, Gloria and Downtown. It stop running at 11 p.m., and on weekends. One-way ticket is R$1.50 and it include the bus transit.
