When I arrived at Rio de Janeiro
International Airport (GIG) after the
immigration checks, the first thing I did
was go to the telephone wicket to buy a
calling card.
It cost me 60$USD but it is very
effective. I called to Canada almost
every two days. Each time I really
stayed online almost 15 to 20 minutes and
that from the day I arrived until the
day I left (15 days). Specially the 9th of
February which fall on our New Year, I
practically called many of my friends to
wish them Happy New Year. With this card
I can call from any public* phones in
Rio. The last day when I left it still
have connection time left on my card.
Phone
cards are also everywhere being sold, in
a kiosk, magazine stand, supermarket,
foreign exchange places and restaurants.
(*)
Phone booths for public in Rio are
numerous but some are not well
maintained and out of service. For
privacy, it is best to use the phone
center shops. Calling a cell phone in
Rio is quite expensive and can be done
in any Locutorio or
Internet-Phone places which are
everywhere in Rio.

All
over South America there are so many shops offering internet and phone
services to the populace. It is a brisk business. They call it LOCUTORIO or
PHONE CENTER/INTERNET CENTERS. Most of these places offer cheap rates and
fast internet connection for tourists and locals. For almost every other
street downtown Rio, there are these shops that cater to those who cannot
afford expensive connections at their residence.
You either pay upfront before internet use or pay after. Be careful or be
conscious of rates. For example one shop will offer 79 cents per minute for
a call to Canada while another shop two blocks offers half the rate. Also
make sure that the computers are new and that the phones are clean.
In Rio
the closer the internet shop is to the beach, the higher the rates.
I was
at the Internet place almost every
morning. The place I came very often is
the one on Rua Constante Ramos between
Avenida N.S. Copacabana and Av.
Atlântica close to Copacabana
beach. Per minute internet use is not
very expensive something like 12 cents
American only.
