The GIRL, the BEACH, and the IPANEMA
madness........
Tall and tan and young and lovely the
girl from Ipanema goes walkin' and when
she passes each one, the passer goes
Ahhhh. Oh but I watch her so sadly, how
can I tell her I lover her?
 Remember the song in the 60's? The Girl
from Ipanema summarizes what awaits you
in this beach paradise of suburban Rio.
Now the district has transformed, start
spreading the news, as the city that
never sleeps. Seedy coffee bars,
discotheques, boutiques, restaurants,
flea markets, concert halls, bed and
breakfast hangouts adorn the nearby
streets that stretch from the end of
Copacabana to Leblon. The beach typifies
the
girl-watch-the-boys-while-the-boys-watch-the-girl
scene in one famous song. Ipanema is
where the metrosexuals, heterosexuals,
homosexuals and other whatchamacallits
congregate. The wee hours of the morning
is teeming with bar-hoppers which make
Ipanema a 24-hour leisure paradise.
While downtown Rio sleeps, Ipanema
bustles and hustles to the tune of the
disco while the hub of traffic
constantly make the roads habitable all
night.
Want some fashions from Versace, Armani
and Industria Brasileira? Ipanema has
various kinds of shops that suit the
taste of all income brackets. The favela (Rio's shanties) looms at the top
of the hill surrounding Ipanema, yes,
but tourists seem to enjoy undisturbed
the tranquility of the beach, the sea
wind and the gentle smiles of the
townspeople.
In Ipanema, I always see the sun shining
and the sunset for a moment contemplates
the coming daylight in few short hours.

This is the feather wig I
bought for our festival
webcast reporter Yanira. I had
a difficult time finding this
feather hat amidst the sea of
stores that are closed during
the carnival. In front of the
Help disco in the evening they
have many kiosks along
Atlβntica Ave. and there are
few that sell costumes. Still
I was able to manage buying
one costume to compliment this
feather hat.
Yanira will be wearing
the costume for this year's
Latin reportages. |
