In 2005 I took the bus, subway and at
the foot of Corcovado took the mini cog
train to go to Cristo Redentor statue.
This time (Feb 2008) I took a taxi to
tour the Corcovado. If you are a group
taking Taxi it becomes cheaper compare
to riding a public transportation by
bus. Buses and Metro in Rio are on time,
less traffic as compared to North
America, you can go everywhere if you
know what bus number to take.
The bus ride is cheap and you can choose
either you want to take the
airconditined one or without AC with
price is slighly different. Last trip in
2005 when I visited Corcovado, I took a
bus and drop off at the Corcovado
entrance at the bottom of the mountain
at the Cosme Velho station , I have to
pay for the cog-train ride to go up the
mountain for R$36 (for adults and R$ 18
for children) if you are 4 then you have
to spend R$36 x 4 to go up, while if you
take a taxi to go up there, the taxi fee
is just equivalent to 1 cog-train ride
to the top and the taxi driver will wait
for you to drive you down. Some tips for
your savings.
Taxi: Don't have to wait for buying
cog-train up to the top ticket but you
miss the scene during the ride up and
down. You only have 30 minutes to take
some snapshot then come to meet your
driver going down. You don't have to pay
the entrance at the top, so taxi fare is
your only expense.
Train: You pay for the cog-train ride
almost the same fee as the taxi ride for
each person, so if you are in group it
will cost more. Takes too long in line
for the ticket specially during carnival
time. There is a small wait half way as
the two trains pass each other. You are
not time limited to explore and enjoy
the view. Take note this statue is now
considered as one of the top 8 wonders
of the world. Going there for just 30
minutes is not enough. Taxi ride will
not give you enough time to discover the
topography of the Brazilian mountains
close by. After 6:00 PM you don't have
the cog-train but you can stay longer at
the Corcovado as long you don't want to
miss the last cog-train down.

the top prior to boarding the train. It can be a
different weather way up there with visibility
possibly to zero on a rainy day ...
